Once the 1955 referendum transformed the State of Vietnam into a Republic, Personalism became the guiding ideology of Ngô Đình Diệm's government. Many critical observers of the time dismissed Vietnamese Personalism as a pale imitation of Emmanuel Mounier's original thought. The purpose of this articule is to show, through the intellectual journey of two missionaries, Alexis Cras et Fernand Parrel, how French Personalism spread and transformed into a truly Vietnamese political thought.
